Natural LANGA’S STONE takes its name from the geographical area of Alta Langa, the area in southern Piedmont with characteristic rounded hills and home to the refined “round and gentle” hazelnut.
The presence of an exclusive sandstone, a sedimentary rock composed of very fine grains of sand (arena) and Miocene in age as it dates back to the geological era called the Miocene, when the Langhe area was occupied by the ancient sea called the Po Gulf, from which the rock that constitutes the Pietra di Langa stones gradually formed along with the hilly landscape, is linked to the particular geological formation of this area.
At 700-800 meters deep, fine muddy deposits accumulated, in which worms like Paleodyction, small crustaceans, and solitary corals like Flabellum dug tunnels, and on the surface of the mud, mollusks and sea urchins crawled.
Periodically, storms and telluric movements caused underwater landslides, and layers of sand overlapped and alternated with muddy ones.
The increasing enormous pressure of the sediments gave rise to the rocks. The muds became marls (calcareous clays) while the sand grains cemented by the carbonates present in the seawater formed the sandstone slabs of the Langhe.
Towards the end of the Miocene, the tectonic movements of the African plate towards the European one caused the emergence of the Langhe, which assumed its current conformation following erosive action during the Quaternary period, when watercourses incised the land, exposing the typical alternating layers of marls and sandstones.
The quarry itself is located in an area far from the inhabited center and traffic. By opening it, we have enhanced lands that had been abandoned because they were too impervious.
Our constant commitment, as established by the cultivation project, is to proceed with the recovery and re-greening of the area used for extraction.
